Certified Nurses Day

In a time of health crisis, no one becomes more important to the patient and his family than the nurses who care for him. From providing emotional and physical comfort to watchful monitoring and state-of-the-art care and assessment, nurses are life-saving heroes -without -capes who positively shape the outcomes for patients when they are at their most vulnerable.

Even among the noble profession, a select group rises to the top as the elite in their field, dedicating their time, talents, and resources to specialize in their preferred area of care.

Certified nurses go above and beyond general competence with patients. They demonstrate a growth mindset and rise to the top of their field by years of experience and additional coursework and professional development…true life-long learners. Certified nurses stay abreast of changes and developments in patient care standards, technologies, and protocols that enable them to provide the highest quality of patient care.

On March 19, Trek Healthcare Staffing joins professional nursing associations across the nation in celebrating Certified Nurses Day, an annual observance to express our profound gratitude for these outstanding practitioners.

Where Certified Nurses Day Began

March 19 wasn’t chosen by accident. Certified Nurses Day coincides with the birthday of Dr. Margretta Madden Styles, a pioneer in nursing certification. Nearly half a century ago, she designed the first in-depth study of nursing credentials, research that led to the development of the standards in nursing we adhere to today. She is credited with inspiring the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and her legacy has strengthened the profession and improved the quality of life for patients in hospitals across the country and beyond.

Certified Nurses: An Elite Group

Nurses in all fields are known for their service, professionalism, and dedication to the work that they demonstrate. Yet, even among the members of this selfless profession, some choose to go the extra mile by continuing their education long past their university days and earning their licenses.

Research suggests that nurses who have made this greater investment provide the highest levels of patient care and satisfaction, so they are highly sought after by hospitals and clinics. They are leaders in patient advocacy and experts in their field. Their on-going training equips them for the ever-expanding knowledge of diseases, treatment options, and technologies that make healthcare the dynamic and exciting field it is. As they implement evidence-based practices, patient life expectancy and quality of life improve.

The rewards are many for certified nurses. Their specialized expertise paves the way for career advancement, better pay, and leadership opportunities, as well as the personal satisfaction that comes from making a lasting positive impact.

How to Become a Certified Nurse

Over 180 specialized certifications are available to nurses in the United States, ranging from stroke care to dialysis, from palliative care to clinical research. Some of the most in-demand certifications are Certified Emergency Nurse, Certified Nurse, Operating Room, and Acute/Critical Care Nursing.

Each of these certifications has its own set of requirements. Common among them are a nursing degree and license, supplemental coursework, clinical hours (though they vary in number), and an examination. Certifications are maintained through continuing education and are renewed every two-to-five years, depending on the certification.
